Finding a way to win

Lead Summary

Mason Cleveland knows rankings don’t mean a whole lot, but still, the New Hampton/Turkey Valley senior wasn’t exactly happy when the Predicament unveiled their rankings on Monday morning.
Cleveland, who is ranked fifth at 132 pounds in Class 2A by iawrestle.com, was just eighth in the Predicament’s Class 2A rankings, which meant he’d have an early chance to show that particular set of rankings missed the boat because Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Remington Hansen is ranked sixth by the Predicament.
Score one for Cleveland, who survived one trip to his back to score a 10-8 overtime victory over Hanson on a night in which the Chickasaws, despite some injuries and a wrestler not making weight, scored two dual victories.
“He weighed in at 138, but I didn’t want him to run from me so I bumped up,” Cleveland said. “I wanted to prove that there’s no way he should be ranked higher than me.”
Not that it was easy, but in the end, Cleveland scored a takedown early in the sudden-death overtime period to score a victory.
“He’s a really funky wrestler and does a lot of weird things,” Cleveland said, “but it was good to wrestle a kid like that because I know I’ll be ready the next time I see someone like that."
