New Hampton senior Austin Flugum had figuratively “broken the ankles” of a North Tama defender to free himself for an open 3-pointer, which he drained during the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s game.
It was just one play in what turned out to be a 64-46 New Hampton victory — the first of coach Ryan Rausch’s career — but, in a way, it spoke volumes about the Chickasaws.
After the ball hit nothing but net, the New Hampton players on the bench leapt into the air and the Chickasaws on the court broke out in a collective smile.
“One of the things I love about my team is they truly want their teammates to do well,” Rausch said. “That’s the mark of good teams. They don’t care who does something, they’re happy for them. It doesn’t have to be ‘me’ for these guys.
